First Aid Kit For Horses

Signed permission form to allow treatment of horses, important if owner can't be reached. Some vets will not treat without.

Tools: Flashlight
Stethoscope
Thermometer
Scissors &/or knife
Hoof Pick and hoof knife
Hoof testers, opt
Twitch                                                                            
Materials: Surgical Scrub Preparation (povidone iodine, chlorhexidine gluconate)
Wound dressings: Gauze sponges, Telfa pads
Bandage material:
  • 12 sheet cottons
  • 2, lIb packages of roll cotton
  • 2-6 Vetrap bandages or similar
  • 4-8 cloth leg wraps
  • US Army field bandage (app 22"X24")
  • Do not use white tape for wrapping legs, it does not expand.

Eye cover/protection
Clean Trash Bag:
use as clean liner for bucket for water for wound care

Medications:

Antiseptic ointment: Betadine or similar
Silvadene or similar
"triple antibiotic" ointments

Other medications: to be based on your vet’s recommendation
ie: Bute, Banamine, oral & injectable antibiotics, tranquilizer

These should all be stored in a waterproof storage case. Remember to keep this at barn and to take it with you when you trailer. If you trail ride often you may consider making a small saddle pack size first aid kit.
